Wheelie bins are being introduced by Sefton Council from June 2007. There will be two bins, a green one for compostable garden waste and a grey one for everything that cannot be recycled or composted. The existing Green Bee and Blue Bag schemes for recyclable tins, bottles and paper will continue as before.

The bins will be emptied fortnightly in turn, green one week and grey the next. Green boxes and blue bags will continue to be emptied every week.

Some residents are concerned about health problems caused by non-compostable kitchen food waste only being collected fortnightly. Lib Dem Councillor David Tattersall, Sefton's cabinet member for Environment has said that a separate container for food waste could be introduced and collected weekly.

David is quoted in the Southport Visiter as saying "We're looking very closely indeed, but no final decision has been taken because of cost, into the possibility of providing, for those that want it as an opt-in arrangement, additional containers for people to put food waste and plate scrapings into. We want to do this because it will answer complaints that people may have about rotting food"
